Vitamin D

Vitamin D – Any of the anti-rachitic vitamins D1, D2, D3 found in milk and fish-liver oils or obtained by irradiating provitamin D with ultraviolet light.

Vitamin D (ergosterol) is manufactured in the body from a combination of chemically related substances, and is essential for the formation and growth of bones and teeth and for the utilization of calcium and phosphorus in the body. It is often called the sunshine vitamin because of the abundance supplied by the ultraviolet rays of the sun through their chemical action on the skin, and the person who gets enough sunshine each day receives sufficient amounts of vitamin D.

Vitamin D deficiency causes rickets in children, and in adults it results in improper utilization of calcium in the bones and produces a condition known as osteomalacia. These disorders can be corrected by adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D. Codliver oil, vitamin D concentrates, and sunshine or ultraviolet irradiation are effective in promoting a rapid improvement in rickets. Other good sources of vitamin D are eggs, salmon, tuna fish, milk and butter.

Vitamin D1 is a molecular compound of ergocalciferol (D2) with lumisterol (a naturally occurring compound that is part of the vitamin D family of steroid compounds.)

Vitamin D2 is derived from fungal and plant sources, and is not produced by the human body.
